Big-reel smoothness at a beginner-friendly price
Few reels have earned as much loyalty on a budget as the Pflueger President. For years it’s been the reel anglers recommend when someone asks for something affordable that doesn’t feel cheap — and it still holds that crown.
What makes it special is how much smoothness Pflueger packed in at the price. The multi-bearing system gives it a fluid retrieve that genuinely rivals reels costing twice as much, and the sealed drag stays consistent instead of grabbing and slipping the way bargain reels tend to.
The graphite body keeps it light and comfortable for all-day casting, and it comes braid-ready so you can spool up without buying extra backing (though a thin mono base still helps). For panfish, trout, and light-to-medium bass fishing, it simply does everything you need.
It isn’t perfect. The drag is modest under heavy pressure, so it’s not the reel for big saltwater fish or hauling bass out of thick cover. And while it’s durable for the price, it won’t take the long-term abuse a metal-bodied premium reel will. But those are fair trade-offs at this cost.
Bottom line: if you’re starting out, buying for a kid, or just want a dependable light-tackle reel without spending much, the President is about as safe a bet as there is. It’s the best bang-for-buck spinning reel we recommend.

Absolutely — it's one of the most recommended starter reels thanks to its smoothness, light weight, and low price. It's forgiving and easy to use.
Yes, the spool is braid-ready. Adding a thin mono backing first helps keep braid from slipping on the spool.
The 30 (2500) size is the most versatile for panfish, trout, and bass. Go smaller (20/1000) for ultralight and larger (35/40) for bigger fish.
The Stradic is smoother, more durable, and better for saltwater — but costs much more. The President delivers most of the everyday performance for a fraction of the price.
It can survive occasional light inshore use if rinsed thoroughly afterward, but it isn't sealed for saltwater. For regular salt use, choose a reel built for it like the Daiwa BG.
