Honest Reviews. Expert Advice. Better Fishing
A worm that never goes bad on you
There is a reason the nightcrawler is one of the most universal baits in freshwater fishing, and Berkley’s Gulp! version keeps almost everything anglers love about it while quietly removing the parts they do not: the dirt, the refrigerator container, and the trip to the bait shop that so often falls through at the worst time.
The realism is the selling point. The body carries convincing segmentation and a natural taper that reads to a fish as the real thing, and the Gulp! formula does the rest. Because the biodegradable material disperses far more scent than ordinary plastic, the bait keeps working even when it is sitting dead still on the bottom, drawing fish from well outside their visual range.
Where these really shine is on the walleye spinner rig. Threaded behind a blade and trolled at the right speed, a Gulp! crawler flutters and puts out a scent trail that walleye track down, and plenty of anglers report catching several fish on a single worm. It is also right at home on a weedless jig head for bass or drop-shotted for panfish.
The value angle is what earns it a spot here. A pack costs little, keeps essentially forever, and rides in the tackle bag all season without any care. For an angler who hates realizing at dawn that the worms went bad in the garage, that reliability alone is worth the switch.
Set your expectations honestly on durability. The soft body is not the toughest on the market and will tear after a few aggressive fish, so carry enough to swap out as you go. The scent is also strong and messy to handle, and leaving the pack open lets the baits dry and fade. Most anglers gladly accept those quirks for the action.
Bottom line: Gulp! Nightcrawlers deliver live-crawler results with none of the upkeep, and on walleye spinner rigs in particular they are one of the best-value baits you can keep on hand.

| Best For | Anglers wanting a worm that stores forever and stays on the hook |
For many situations, yes. The Gulp! scent formula disperses strongly and the realistic body triggers strikes, while giving you a worm that never dies, dries out in dirt, or needs the fridge.
They are proven on walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass, panfish and catfish, and are especially effective during fall feeding periods.
They excel on walleye spinner rigs and harnesses, and also fish well on weedless jig heads, drop-shots or wacky-rigged for bass and panfish.
Reasonably, but honestly not the toughest option out there. The soft body can tear after a few fish, so carry enough to swap baits as needed. Many anglers accept that trade for the superior action and scent.
Standard Gulp! Nightcrawlers ship in a sealed pack rather than a brine tub. Reseal the pack after use so the baits do not dry out and lose scent.
