The dependable, smooth-casting mono standard
Ask a room full of anglers what line they learned on and a large share will say Trilene XL. Berkley’s flagship monofilament has been a top seller for decades, and it stays there by nailing the fundamentals: it casts smoothly, handles easily, and costs so little that respooling is never a painful decision.
The XL stands for smoothness, and that’s the line’s whole personality. A low-memory formula keeps it from holding tight coils off the spool, so casts come off clean and manageable, especially on spinning reels where memory-prone line causes tangles. For new anglers, that forgiving nature covers a lot of technique mistakes.
Berkley’s updated formula improved knot and wet strength, and in practice the line ties reliable connections without much fuss. The natural stretch of monofilament also works in your favor here, cushioning hard hooksets and absorbing headshakes that would pull hooks on a no-stretch braid. It’s a forgiving system from cast to landing.
Where mono shows its limits is sensitivity and durability. That same stretch mutes the subtle ticks you’d feel through braid or fluorocarbon, so bite detection is softer. Monofilament also absorbs water and degrades under UV faster than other line types, which means respooling once or twice a season is part of the deal.
Abrasion resistance is adequate for open water and moderate cover, but if you’re dragging baits through rock and heavy timber, Berkley’s tougher XT or a fluorocarbon leader is the better call. Trilene XL is happiest as a general-purpose, all-around line rather than a heavy-cover specialist.
Value is the clincher. Between tiny pony spools and 1000-yard bulk options, few lines cost less per yard, and it is stocked practically everywhere. Bottom line: for dependable, smooth-casting monofilament that any angler can trust and afford, Trilene XL remains the easiest line in the category to recommend.

Yes. Its low memory and forgiving stretch make it one of the most beginner-friendly lines available. It casts smoothly, ties easy knots, and hides small mistakes that would cost you fish on stiffer line.
XL is optimized for smoothness and castability with lower memory, ideal for spinning reels and finesse. XT (Extra Tough) trades some suppleness for greater abrasion resistance in heavy cover.
Mono absorbs water and breaks down under UV, so respooling at least once or twice a season is smart for heavy users. If it feels stiff, discolored, or holds tight coils, replace it.
Like most monofilament, it is roughly neutral to slightly buoyant, which makes it a good choice for topwater and floating presentations where you don't want the line dragging the bait down.
Clear is the safe all-around choice for stealth. Low-Vis Green blends well in stained water, and the Clear/Fluorescent version helps you see the line above water for detecting light bites.
